Johann Johann Richter was born in Babin (Babbin), Pommern, Germany, about 1831. He married Katharina Elizabeth Schmuland, also born in Pommern, Germany.
They produced nine children. At the time of the 2002 reunion, it is estimated there were over 700 direct descendants.
